In Vitro Fertilization

Learn how in vitro fertilization, also known as IVF, can help patients become parents

IVF is an advanced fertility treatment that our Tennessee fertility doctors use to help patients overcome infertility. At Nashville Fertility Center, we’re among the nation’s leading providers of advanced fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization. We also work with Ovation® Fertility. This state-of-the-art laboratory offers services based on the most current research and best practices in fertility care.

Discover who is a candidate for in vitro fertilization

IVF is an effective fertility treatment that can help patients overcome various fertility issues. Certain factors can make this advanced fertility treatment a great option for hopeful parents.

Advanced maternal age or diminished ovarian reserve. Sometimes, a patient may not be able to conceive using treatments like IUI due to advanced maternal age (over age 35) or diminished ovarian reserve. In this case, our team might recommend in vitro fertilization.

Absent, blocked or abnormal fallopian tubes. In vitro fertilization allows an embryologist to fertilize the eggs in a lab. As such, this treatment can bypass structural problems that could prevent fertilization or the movement of the fertilized egg to the uterus.

Abnormal sperm count or sperm function. This advanced fertility treatment allows patients to utilize options like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to overcome sperm issues.

Specific female fertility problems. In vitro fertilization can help patients with endometriosis, anti-sperm antibodies or severe cervical factor.

Unexplained infertility. If a patient has been facing infertility for a significant period, or has had numerous unsuccessful IUI procedures, IVF with preimplantation genetic testing could improve their odds of conception.

Our Tennessee fertility doctors can help patients determine whether this treatment is right for them.

What to expect from an IVF cycle

During a cycle of in vitro fertilization, the patient takes ovarian stimulation medications that cause multiple eggs to grow. When enough eggs mature, the doctor removes them from the ovaries during an outpatient procedure. An embryologist then fertilizes the eggs in the lab, either by placing them with sperm or injecting them with sperm using ICSI.

The lab specialists closely monitor the resulting embryos as they mature over three to five days. The doctor then works with the patient to determine which embryo they will transfer. We can freeze any remaining viable embryos for future pregnancy attempts.

We work with a lab that provides leading-edge services

Patients can benefit from the advanced services from the Ovation lab. These treatments can often be important additions to the journey to become pregnant with a healthy baby.

Assisted hatching. This procedure helps the embryo implant into the uterine lining.

Preimplantation genetic testing. We use PGT-A to determine whether an embryo is aneuploid, meaning it has too few or too many chromosomes. PGT-M allows us to screen embryos for genetic defects involving a single gene, like cystic fibrosis.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection. ICSI consists of an embryologist injecting a single live sperm into the center of a mature egg during an in vitro fertilization cycle.

The high-quality services that our Tennessee fertility doctors provide can help patients overcome a range of barriers to parenthood. With our support, patients can fulfill their dream of taking home a healthy baby. Contact us for more information about our fertility services.
