Unexplained Infertility Treatment

Unexplained infertility treatment offers a path of hope for our patients

Struggling with infertility can leave you feeling sad and disappointed. After infertility testing, receiving a diagnosis of unexplained infertility can lead to an even greater level of frustration because you seem to have no real explanation for the difficulty. Our Nashville fertility physicians are here to provide unexplained infertility treatment designed to help you achieve your family-building goals.

Breaking down common causes with infertility testing

Couples and individuals who have difficulty conceiving often visit our Nashville fertility physicians to find answers. Generally, we define infertility as not getting pregnant after one year of trying, or six months if the female partner is 35 years or older. Our doctors will recommend comprehensive infertility testing to pinpoint the issues.

We often find that infertility stems from one of several common causes.

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Ovulatory dysfunction
  • Physical abnormalities
  • Certain genetic conditions
  • Male factor infertility

A brief explanation of unexplained infertility

An unexplained infertility diagnosis results from an elimination of other factors. With infertility testing, your doctor will review your full medical history; order blood work; perform an exam; and schedule an ultrasound and hysterosalpingogram, or HSG. Genetic carrier screening is also a helpful tool to evaluate whether a genetic factor in either partner may be playing a role. Additionally, any male partner will need to provide a sperm sample for a semen analysis.

If these tests reveal none of the usual culprits, your doctor will likely confirm a diagnosis of unexplained infertility. The good news here is that no specific reason is keeping you from having a baby. The bad news is that we can’t narrow down what has thwarted past attempts at pregnancy.

What types of unexplained infertility treatment are available?

Based on your situation, your doctor will make recommendations for potential unexplained infertility treatment options. We may start with timed intercourse; medication such as Clomid to support ovulation; or intrauterine insemination (IUI), which places the sperm directly in the uterus to encourage fertilization. If those efforts fail, your doctor may move on to IVF, in vitro fertilization.

As the gold standard in infertility treatment, IVF produces the highest levels of success as an unexplained infertility treatment. The IVF process involves ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs. Then, the sperm and egg are combined in a laboratory setting. One resulting embryo is transferred back to the uterus, while any remaining are frozen and stored for later use.

Remember, unexplained infertility doesn’t have to mean the end of your dreams. The team at Nashville Fertility Center can offer infertility testing and unexplained infertility treatment that can deliver positive results, and hopefully a positive pregnancy test.
