Preimplantation Genetic Testing

Discover how genetic testing of embryos can help you develop a healthy pregnancy

Genetic testing of embryos can be an important step on the path to parenthood for patients at our Tennessee fertility center. Preimplantation genetic testing involves an embryologist examining the DNA of cells from embryos that result from an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.

During the genetic test, the embryologist can determine whether any of the embryos have chromosomal abnormalities. This information helps the patient and their fertility doctor decide which embryo to transfer. It also gives patients the peace of mind that the resulting baby will have a better chance of being healthy.

Learn more about the two types of genetic testing of embryos

The two main types of preimplantation genetic tests include preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) and preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic/single gene defects (PGT-M). Both tests can help patients make informed decisions about their fertility journey.

PGT-A, formerly PGS, is how embryologists assess whether an embryo is aneuploid, or has too few or too many chromosomes. Aneuploidy can cause miscarriage, implantation failure and chromosomal disorders like Turner syndrome or Down syndrome. This testing can also determine the sex of each embryo.

PGT-M, formerly PGD, screens embryos for genetic defects involving a single gene, like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease.

The doctors at our Tennessee fertility center can help patients determine whether PGT-A or PGT-M is right for them.

Who can benefit from preimplantation genetic tests?

Both types of genetic testing of embryos support fertility doctors in ensuring they only transfer genetically normal embryos into the uterus of the female patient or the gestational surrogate. However, some patients are better candidates for PGT-A, and others for PGT-M.

Candidates for PGT-A. Women of advanced maternal age who have no known inheritable genetic disorders can benefit from PGT-A. It is also helpful for women who have experienced recurrent miscarriages or unsuccessful IVF cycles.

Candidates for PGT-M. Doctors typically recommend PGT-M to women and men with known inheritable genetic disorders, like cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular dystrophy. This test is especially beneficial for these patients as it allows the embryologist to test the embryos for whatever disorder the patient is a carrier for.

The team at our Tennessee fertility center works closely with patients to help ensure they receive the fertility tests and treatments that give them the best chance of building a healthy family. Contact us for more information about genetic testing of embryos.
