Discover why PCOS Awareness Month is important

Discover why PCOS Awareness Month is importantDuring PCOS Awareness Month, our Tennessee fertility center wants to help women learn more about polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms and treatments. PCOS is a metabolic disorder that is the result of an imbalance of reproductive hormones. This disorder affects millions of women and can result in a range of symptoms. It is also one of the leading causes of infertility. Thankfully, treatments can make a big difference.

What we want women to learn during PCOS Awareness Month

A primary aim of PCOS Awareness Month is to help women understand the common symptoms of this disorder. This knowledge allows them to seek the necessary treatment. Polycystic ovary syndrome can cause a range of symptoms.

  • Irregular periods
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • High levels of androgens and insulin
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Facial hair
  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated cholesterol

In addition, specialists have found links between PCOS and diabetes, heart disease, obesity, anxiety and depression, and uterine cancer.

The specialists at our Tennessee fertility center recommend women see their medical care provider as soon as possible if they suspect they have PCOS. To diagnose this disorder, doctors typically review a woman’s medical history, and often recommend a pelvic exam, bloodwork and an ultrasound.

How doctors typically treat PCOS

Another important component of PCOS Awareness Month is determining what to do if you receive a polycystic ovary syndrome diagnosis. The first thing many medical care providers recommend for overweight women with PCOS is weight loss. Just losing 5% of your body weight can help to minimize the symptoms of this disorder. A doctor might also prescribe birth control pills for women not currently trying to have a baby.

If a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome is trying to conceive, our Tennessee fertility center can help. The experienced doctors at our clinic might recommend ovulation induction medication or IVF in certain situations.

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome who are trying to build their family can rest assured that help is available. Our compassionate team is incredibly knowledgeable about this disorder and can support women from diagnosis and treatment to pregnancy. Contact us for more information about PCOS.
